Queen City Preparatory Academy offers other programs outside of the academy's extracurricular activities.  We believe that it is very important to reach youth in and around the City of Charlotte and beyond.  In order to stress the importance of health and physical fitness, we have created programs to help keep youth interested in sports which occur year round.

Summer
Basketball Camp

We have an annual basketball summer camp for youth ages 5-15 running from June through August. Our basketball camps have a unique focus of teaching basic fundamentals and various drills and techniques. Campers learn basketball handling skills through intensive ball control drills and then build on their superior ball-handling skills by learning quick moves off the dribble.  Each camp session will provide a mix of physical activity, practice, instruction, life skills, and fun!  There are indoor and outdoor activities as well as field trips!  As an added bonus, each camper is provided with a daily breakfast and a daily "picnic style" lunch, also a camp t-shirt!

Performing Arts Camp
Performing arts offer an opportunity for a young person to display their natural gifts of imagination, music, movement and role playing. Through performing arts, young people sharpen their creativity, improve their communication skills, gain self-confidence, and learn the importance of teamwork. Above all, young people enjoy becoming a part of the magic that they create on the stage.

Our Performing Arts Camp is for young people ages 5 to 16. Our unique and affordable camp is designed to promote cultural equity and to increase the availability of cultural experiences for African American participants and audiences. Our camp is the essence of the “triple threat”, offering classes and workshops in not only acting but dance and musical theatre. Rehearsals and ensemble playing will be part of this unique process as well as the focus. Campers explore their creativity in other areas of theatre such as playwrights, technical theatre, and design.

The Performing Arts Camps will run for 10 weeks, beginning June 13, 2011 through August 20, 2011, Monday-Friday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Each of our three sessions has a specific theme and concludes with an evening performance for friends and family.

Session 1 (June 13-June 24, 2011)
Free To Dance: Dance is an expression of culture, yet at the same time it is constrained by culture. Campers will explore the role of African culture in modern dance in America. Evening performance held on June 24th.

Session 2 (June 27-July 8, 2011)

Midnight at the Black History Museum: Studying key figures in the evolution of Black History in this country helps us to identify important role models whose lives exemplify values we all wish to follow. This play brings alive the lives of famous African Americans. Evening performance held on July 8th.

Session 3 (July 11-August 19, 2011)

Missing Pieces: American innovation is rich with the contributions of famous black inventors like Elijah McCoy, Lewis Howard Latimer, George Washington Carver and Madame C.J. Walker (Sarah Breedlove). This play teaches the importance of African American inventions. This final performance includes dance and chorus to be held August 19th.
