Academic Program
High student academic achievement is critical to the success of QCP’s program. QCP will offer an intensive college preparatory program in a small school environment integrating academics and performing arts, advisory/leadership, athletics and technology as tools to actualize the unique skills and talents of each student. Honors courses are available in the following subjects: English, Math, Science, Social Studies and Spanish. Advanced Placement courses are available in Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, English 3 & 4 and US History.
Chapel
We all benefit from spiritual time. Required chapel allows students an opportunity to look within and without for answers. Chapels occur once a week as a way to spiritually enrich the students. Attendance for Chapel will be part of the participation grade in Bible class.
Queen City Prep Academy is non-denominational, and we do value our Christian heritage. During weekday chapel services (Wednesdays), students attend bible study services to gather together and focus on God. On Sundays for our boarders, students will attend church services in Charlotte.

The academic program at the Queen City Prep is designed to develop the skills and habits of the mind that students will need to be
successful in a rigorous high school setting and at the college level. Our teachers work collaboratively to revise and adapt a carefully
designed curriculum that pushes our students to think critically and creatively. As our students gain experience with the authentic
endeavors of readers, writers, public speakers, scientists, political scientists, artists, and athletes, they engage in learning that taps
into young adolescents’ desire to question and explore their world. While addressing the North Carolina Standard Course of Study
Curriculum Frameworks, our curriculum is designed to value the learner’s need to investigate, inquire, debate, and explore and to
demonstrate new understanding through a variety of authentic performance assessments and projects. Our goal is to raise young
learners who are equipped with the critical thinking skills and background knowledge to succeed when they graduate from our school
and to use their knowledge to question and enhance the world around them.
As they grow and learn in 4th through 6th grade, our students and teachers work together to make connections across the subject
areas, to the world around them, and to their own lives and experiences as they explore new topics, which reflects our belief in the
interconnected and interrelated nature of knowledge. Our teachers collaborate frequently to explore interdisciplinary questions,
themes, and projects through:
Shared Essential Questions which explore powerful topics such as What is justice?, What is the role of the individual in society? and
Who am I on a cellular level? in each course.
Shared Grade Level Themes which connect learning across the subject areas such as Discovery in Grade 5 and Choices in Grade 6.
Interdisciplinary Projects: Teachers at each grade level work throughout the year to develop interdisciplinary projects in which
students apply learning from multiple subjects in culminating projects.
Exhibition Nights: In the spring of each year, students at each grade level present an Exhibition Night for families and community
members in which they demonstrate their learning across the subject areas.
Interdisciplinary Lessons: Teachers collaborate informally to design lessons that emphasize learning goals from other subjects. A visit
to 6th grade classes might reveal students are designing original buildings to scale in Mathematics, studying earthquake patterns in
Science to choose an ideal location for their buildings, and learning to speak and write persuasively in English, Science, and Social
Studies in order to market their design well.
We know that adolescence is a time of challenges, so our Middle School focuses on the integration of spiritual, academic, and social
skills. We are committed to educating our young people through Kingdom Education. We firmly believe that with the church, home and

Queen City Prep strives to connect with the student body spiritually, emotionally, socially, and intellectually. The High School is a community of a diverse student body offering 9th through 11th grades for the 2010-11 academic year.
Queen City Prep is a Christian school where the spiritual culture is created through venues of daily Bible classes and monthly chapels. The High School curriculum is designed to challenge the student to his/her maximum potential by focusing on core courses – English, Math, Science, History, Foreign Language, and Bible. In addition the High School has enhanced its college preparatory curriculum with the implementation of the Career and Technical Internships Program ("CTI"), where students spend part of their school week working in a business, professional or civic environment. Students may also take courses to become licensed or certified in certain trade or career programs.
The CTI program gives Queen City Prep students an opportunity to work closely with an adult mentor who shares their interests. Students can learn more about the things they care most about while doing meaningful work with real-world consequences. Teachers work closely with mentors to ensure that the internship develops skills from the student’s learning plan.
CTI projects engage students because the internships are based on student interest and passions. CTI projects also show students the importance of multiple areas of study; since the projects require them to make use of several Queen City Prep Learning skills.
The students of the High School are encouraged to participate in our fine arts and athletic programs. We will offer an array of art classes, along with art shows, choir tours, band, and drama. Athletically, we currently offer a Post-Graduate Boys Basketball Team and will offer more athletic programs as more students are enrolled. Fine arts and athletics offer opportunities for students to continue to build harmonious relationships with their peers.
Grades 9-12 feature a college preparatory program. Students take four subjects per semester and attend four subjects per day. We also offer a full honors track and courses in Advanced Placement. The Academic day also allows students time to meet with their teachers should they have questions or difficulties in a particular subject area.
To earn a Queen City Prep Diploma, a student must complete 28 credits:
- English = 4
- Bible Studies = 4
- Career and Technical Internships = 2
- Mathematics = 4
- Science = 4
- Social Studies = 4
- Foreign Language = 2
- Computer Technology = 2
- Health = 1
- Art Education = 1
It is important to note that not all Post-Graduates fit nicely into one category. The Academic Dean will work carefully with each family to determine the personal goals of each Post-Graduate student and design an academic schedule to meet those goals.
Post-Graduate students at Queen City Prep typically are students who are preparing themselves for a better college or university. A typical curriculum for these students will include calculus, advanced algebra, critical reading and writing, college chemistry and physics. These college-level courses reinforce prior course work and provide rigorous academic preparation for these students.
Other students may not want to enter an honors-type college program, but need to strengthen their high school transcript in order to gain admission to certain colleges or universities. For these students, Queen City Prep provides ample opportunity for the student to bring his work to a higher level.

Queen City Prep Academy offers courses that can be completed online. What you should know is that virtual classrooms are relatively easy to navigate and contain all of the resources you need to complete your coursework on time and efficiently.
A virtual classroom is an online learning environment that contains all course materials. Virtual classrooms include email and chat rooms, so you can talk to your classmates and instructor just like you would in a real classroom. Virtual classrooms are an easier and more convenient way to attend classes, you can choose when to attend and you can complete the course from the comfort of your own home.
When you log in, you are taken to a landing page where your instructor can post
announcements for all students to see. There is a section containing links to all the
different pages of the virtual classroom, including lectures, assignments, tests, links,
and contact information. It is a good idea to go through the virtual classroom tutorial
before starting a course to get a feel for how the technology works.
A virtual classroom is part of a learning management system, or LMS. The LMS is the software that delivers and maintains the virtual classroom. Some of the most common LMS's that high schools and colleges use are Blackboard, Moodle, and WebCT. Queen City Prep Academy uses Moodle and these software programs are essential to the existence of online classes.
Some of the benefits to virtual classrooms include:
Completion of the course at your own pace.
You can attend classes from anywhere; all you need is an internet connection
Chat room feature, which allows students to interact with each other and the
instructor as if they were all physically in the same room. This provides the same
kind of interaction that the students would get in a typical classroom session of the
course.

Our Curriculum
Authentic
shows students learn best when learning focuses on real world issues and problems. Adult mentors who guide QCP students at their outside internships connect their learning to the authentic world of work and community.
Fun
When learning is fun, learners invest
much more energy and imagination in getting through the hard parts.
Relational
We are challenged to do our best work in communities of people who demand our best, support our efforts and appreciate our work.
Engaging
The curriculum is customized through projects which capture students’ interests and pique their curiosities.
Individualized
Each student brings different learning styles, interests and levels of skill to school.
Learning activities are personalized to fit each child to assure success.
While learning is interest based and individualized, all learning must result in the mastery of basic skills such as reading, writing, mathematics, scientific reasoning, social reasoning and critical thinking. Specific skill standards are used to set student learning goals and provide performance feedback.
